What is Slot?
The meaning of Slot is not quite clear. In linguistics, it is a term describing a narrow depression or opening, used to receive a piece. Its definition is a variety of things, from a slot for receiving coins to a job opening for a chief copy editor. It is also a metaphor for the deer track, where a bloodhound follows a wounded deer’s path. However, it is not clear if Slot was originally used to describe a deer.
A slot, in its most basic sense, is an opening or groove. The term is a transitive verb, and the verb forms slot, slotted, and slotted. The latter is used to describe the action of fitting a piece of timber into a larger piece. Slotted wood is also used to track deer. Generally, slotted wood has a narrow opening or groove. It is the preferred method for inserting a coin into a post office machine, but it is not always necessary.
The term slot is also used to refer to the area between the faceoff circles in the offensive zone. However, the term may refer to two different places on the ice. The low slot, which is directly in front of the goaltender, is referred to as the low slot. The high slot, on the other hand, is the area in the middle of the ice, above the faceoff circles. The former is the best area to shoot a puck.
