How to Play Poker

Poker

Typically, poker is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. A hand consists of five cards. The aim of the game is to be the highest ranking hand. This is determined by the ranking of the individual cards. The cards are ranked from ace to king.

The five cards of a hand can be of any suit. Some poker games use wild cards to supplement any other card. In some variant games, there are also jokers.

The cards are dealt face up. The dealer deals two cards to each player. Each active player then shows his full hand. The dealer then has the last right to shuffle. If the dealer cannot shuffle, then the dealer must offer the pack to the opponent. The opponent may cut the pack.

Each player must place a certain number of chips into the pot. The minimum bet usually ranges from $1 to $5. The stake is agreed at the beginning of the hand. In some games, the stake is capped after three or four raises.

If the pot is split, the winning hand is determined by the highest ranking hand. A hand containing two pair beats a hand that consists of one pair and three other cards. Similarly, a hand containing two pairs beats a hand containing two pairs and a single card.

In poker, a hand with two pairs and a fifth card is called a straight flush. In a tie, the highest unmatched card breaks the tie.
