Are You a Slot?

Slot

The word slot is a late 14c. word that originally referred to the hollow in the throat above the breastbone. The word is derived from Old French esclot, which is of uncertain origin. It also has Old Norse roots, with slod meaning “hollow.” The term “slot” as a word first appears in the 1520s, and slot machine as a verb appears in 1888.

The term “slot” has two meanings: the authorization to land or take off at a particular airport for a specific period of time. The main purpose of slots is to manage air traffic at busy airports and to avoid repeated delays caused by multiple flights. In fact, the term “slot” is now used to describe a whole category of individuals – from urban teenagers to electronic gadget addicts. No matter what your personal preference is, you’re probably a SLOT!

A component is a reusable container for a single component, and its purpose is to provide a simple way to reuse that component. A single “normal” component is limited by its ability to enforce a pattern. Props are often overused and pass large sections of content. But a Slot can span the entire pattern, and allows other components and HTML to be placed inside. The same is true for other components. The resulting template allows the component to be reused as a pattern definition.

A slot machine’s pay table lists credits when a certain combination of symbols appears on the paytable. Some symbols may represent multiple other symbols, so the pay table is a must-read when playing a slot machine. Whether you’re playing for fun or for cash, a pay table will tell you what you can expect to win. A pay table can be found on the machine’s face, in the help menu, or in the game’s help section.
