Why You Shouldn’t Play the Lottery

Lottery is a system of public gambling that awards prizes to people who have chosen numbers on tickets. It is often seen as a way to raise money for government projects. It is one of the most popular forms of gambling in the world. Lottery is also a form of taxation, and many states use it to supplement their tax revenues. The earliest recorded lotteries date back to the Low Countries in the 15th century. They were used to raise money for town fortifications and to help the poor. In modern times, state governments have adopted the lottery as a source of “painless” revenue and are under constant pressure to increase it.

Because lottery officials are in a position to maximize revenues, they often make decisions that are at cross-purposes with the general public interest. They may promote lottery play in ways that encourage compulsive gambling or have a regressive effect on lower-income groups; they might sell tickets with numbers close together, for example. Lotteries also tend to grow rapidly in size and complexity, making it difficult to understand how they are financed.

Aside from these concerns, there are more fundamental reasons to oppose state lotteries. The Bible teaches that God wants people to earn their wealth honestly by working hard (Proverbs 23:5), not through gambling. Moreover, when people gamble to win the lottery, they focus on their temporary riches rather than on eternal rewards. As a result, they become depressed and prone to addiction.
